Some definitions.

Parties: People / groups who are directly involved in a dispute e.g. households.

Beneficiaries: Individuals affected by a dispute ( whether directly or indirectly ) who have benefited from UNITE's intervention in the dispute.

Community mediation: this typically involves disputes between neighbours over issues such as noise, parking and children's ball games. The number of beneficiaries in a community case is the number of people in all of the households involved, plus anyone else that any of the parties involved in the dispute believe to have been directly affected by it in some way.

Workplace mediation:
Also known as conciliation, this usually involves conflicts between colleagues, or between teams, who are in dispute but can also include conflicts where there is some other kind of professional relationship between the disputants, for example a doctor and her patient.

Intra-family homelessness mediation:
Conflict resolution work with families where there is a risk of a young person being made homeless. UNITE do this on behalf of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Erimus Housing . UNITE have also carried out intra-family work in Stockton-on-Tees and elsewhere.

Homelessness mediation:
UNITE provide a mediation intervention in Gateshead where there is a risk of someone being made homeless. Unlike UNITE's work in Redcar & Cleveland and Middlesbrough, anyone, regardless of age or situation, who is at risk of being made homelessness can call upon UNITE's free mediation service. This has included mediating between landlords and tenants.
