Competent mediator status

After basic training mediators go on to complete a portfolio of evidence to achieve Competent Mediator Status (CMS). Mediators receive a copy of the assessment pack which sets out the standards and evidence that needs to be gathered. They work with their supervisor to plan how they will gather their evidence from their past and current experience. The limit on previous experience is usually the past two years. The portfolio is assessed internally and externally. Evidence from a NOCN (National Open College Network) training course, completed in the previous two years, can be used as part of the CMS portfolio evidence.

The standards describe: · What a competent mediator is expected to be able to do. · The range of skills and qualities that a competent mediator will demonstrate. · The areas of knowledge and understanding that are required to underpin good practice.

The standards are in six sections: · Preparing for a case. · Initial and follow up contact with clients. · Conducting mediation. · Evaluation and accountability. · Case administration and management. · Working in a professional and ethical framework.
